The Base or Root Chakra Found at the base of the Body between the anus and genitals on the perineal floor. The symbol is a square with four lotus petals. Each petal symbolises psychological states of great joy, natural pleasure, delight in controlling passions, a blissfulness in concentration. When we meditate we sit directly on this chakra. The colour is blood red we are born through this Chakra it is our connection to this planet earth. It is also the start of the Chakras that run up the centre of each person’s body. The predominant sense is Smell, The nose the work organ is the anus Vayu is for air that pushes a child from the womb, expels semen from the male organ urine from both sexes.
The attributes of this chakra is when functioning optimally is that we feel very grounded secure in our being walking firmly and with purpose on the earth, our confidence and creativity abounds being sure of what they do and seeing any project they may embark upon through to its conclusion. Out of Balance a person will be insecure and feel fearful, they are unable to complete projects and are unable to inspire others. Health issues associated with this imbalance are Arthritis, Constipation and problems with feet knees and hips. A wonderful Dru sequence to re-balance is the Earth Sequence, with its five repetitions it works with the five layers of human Experience carrying I feel the Chakra from inside our bodies to our subtle energy field. When I do this sequence I visualise my connection to this planet feeling a symbiotic relationship working to be in harmony. I internally sound the Bija sound of Lang.
The master posture Tadasana is for me a quick tune up for my relationship with Mother Earth and my base chakra visualising all the alignment points also works I feel with the rest of the Chakras my view is that we cannot work solely with one chakra to the exclusion of the others they are a system and we have to work in conjunction with this one or more may need more attention but this should always be our focus. Harish Johari in his book Chakras sees the Moolhadhara as having dormant coiled energy the Kundalini that can be released through religious practices when this is achieved we move beyond the tattvas.
